Permit fishing in Miami is available all year, but certain months are typically more productive.
February to March (Pre-Spawn) – Permit begin staging for the spawn and move into shallow flats and along channel edges. This is a strong time for sight fishing as fish feed aggressively ahead of their offshore migration. Stable weather and warming water temperatures improve consistency, with the best opportunities often coming on incoming tides as fish slide up onto the flats.
Early to mid April (Transition Period) – Permit start transitioning offshore to spawn, though there are still solid opportunities on the flats. Fishing during this time can be mixed, with some days producing well inshore while others require adjusting toward deeper water or nearshore areas. Early mornings tend to favor flats fishing before fish continue their movement offshore.
Mid April through June (Spawning Season) – Most permit are focused on offshore spawning areas. Flats fishing becomes less predictable, though opportunities can still present themselves under the right conditions. Offshore trips are typically more productive during this period, while inshore fishing is best approached selectively when tides, water clarity, and weather align.
Late June through October (Prime Season) – Late June through October is considered prime permit season. Fish return from spawning and are consistently found on shallow flats, channels, and nearshore structures. Feeding behavior is strong, numbers are higher, and sight fishing is at its best, making this the most reliable and popular time of year for targeting permit.
